1 in 12 adults in the US struggle with TMJ Disorders. Temporomandibular disorder (TMJ) affects the jaw and surrounding muscles leading to teeth grinding, jaw clenching, headaches, the inability to fully open the mouth, clicking in the jaw while opening the mouth, and general jaw pain around the muscles.
Historically, treatment for TMJ has been incredibly limited. It primarily entailed wearing a night guard to prevent grinding and receiving botox in the masseter. Botox has been proven to relax the masseter muscle and provide short term relief for those struggling with TMJ, however this is not an ideal solution for many. Botox requires sessions every 3-4 months, it is an invasive treatment including needles, and also requires time for recovery.
EmFace has discovered a completely new way of treating TMJ without needles, without the need for recovery time, and that only requires 4 sessions. EmFaceE is unique because it combines two simultaneous energy modalities. The primary stimulant being High-Intensity Facial Electromagnetic Stimulation (HIFES) and the secondary being Radiofrequency (RF) Energy.
High-intensity facial electromagnetic stimulations (HIFES) deliver electromagnetic pulses that stimulate the masseter, temporalis, and the pterygoid muscle groups. By focusing on these muscle groups, EmFace is able to not only relax the jaw but retrain the muscles entirely. The treatment reduces patients muscle spasms and jaw clenching, which reduces overall pain as a result.
Radiofrequency (RF) energy focuses on the supportive tissue-level component. The mechanism is able to heat the deep soft tissue in a controlled environment which increases oxygenation and local blood flow. RF energy also aids in reducing muscle stiffness and spasm as well as improving tissue elasticity.
Most TMJ disorders are not purely joint problems but a neuromuscular dysfunction. Some of the most common underlying issues of TMJ disorder include a hyperactive masseter, weak stabilizing muscles in the jaw, poor coordination of jaw movement, and muscle spasms. All of these underlying issues are what causes jaw pain, a limited mouth opening, and the clicking sound while opening the mouth. By targeting these root issues EmFace is able to treat the whole patient rather than singular symptoms.
Testimonial
Gabriella has struggled with TMJ symptoms since she was 7 years old. As a child it manifested as constant fevers, teeth grinding, and migraines. As an adult, Gabriella has broken a tooth due to grinding her teeth at night, she wakes up every morning with pain in her jaw, and is unable toopen her mouth without her jaw clicking.
When assessing her options, botox was off the table. The invasive nature of the procedure was a huge deterrent and the constant maintenance required just wasn’t viable in her life. When hearing about EmFace Gabriella was skeptical at first. Nothing else has worked. Just after the first session, she is already telling her friends and family the benefits of the treatment.
In her first session, Dr. Sara Stock placed the pads on her face around her jaw and masseter. After the treatment started, Gabriella nearly fell asleep because of the sensation.
“The pads were warm and relaxing. It felt like gentle taps along my jaw and in the clenched muscles, there wasn’t any pain at all. I couldn’t help but close my eyes in those 20 minutes of treatment.”
After her treatment, she recalled the relief being immediate. Her frequent migraines have yet to return, she is able to achieve deep sleep at night, and her face appears less puffy.
“I would recommend this to anyone struggling with jaw pain or TMJ/TMD. The sessions are easy and painless, I felt relief right after the treatment, and I’m happy I didn’t have to get poked with a needle to relieve the pain.”
